    Ulick O' Connor & SF

The talk of the FF Ard Fheis got me thinking of our own one. I was a bit taken aback to see Ulick O' Connor strolling around with a cup of tea. It wasn't the cup of tea that took me aback, but the fact he was there at all. I knew he was a bit of a FF style nationalist, but never put him down as a shinner. Apparently he is there most years. Does anyone know how long he's been going to SF Ard Fheiseanna? Is it only in Peace Process years or longer?

I've only ever read his book "A Terrible Beauty is Born: The Irish Troubles 1912-1922". What's his other stuff like?

When I was young I had a book he had authored entitled "Irish Tales & Sagas".

What makes you think he's a Shinner? He may have been an observer, or looking for writing incentive. He may even have been there to meet the Mc Cartneys. I was at a few PSF Ard Fheis meself, and spent the whole time muttering "feckin ,sellout yuppie b*astards". Never judge a book by it's cover, Dod.

Fair enough, I remember being shocked one year to see Risteard Mulcahy (clearly no shinner) at it. However people said to me he was always invited, so I was just wondering. I mean John Drennan actually apologised to me for squeezing past me at one point, obviously he was only there for his job, but when people said Ulick was invited I was just curious.

O' Connor was blacklisted by RTE for about 20 years, and I always presumed that his Shinner leanings were the reason.

I could never listen to the man myself. Insufferable

I figured his physical appearance and worrying inability to speak English coherently, was punishment enough for him.

IIRC I have a book by U. O'Conner called: Executions. It's basically the text and background material to his play on the first four 'official' executions by the Free State during the Civil War. Very interesting it was too.

I also think I have a book he wrote on the IRB but it must be buried somewhere as I havn't set syes on it for a while.
