    The Orange Order...

OK this is my first post so i'm just going to go straight for an issue that has bothered the arse off me for as long as i've been aware of my surroundings. The Orange Order, are they just an organisation promoting unionist interests or a bigoted institution that promotes violence and sectarianism that goes unchecked by the authorities? have at it...

I don't like the Orange Order but I recognise the Unionist community has its traditions. If an attempt were made to ban all 3500 Orange marches it would cause massive violence in NI. Thus, I would say that where the local residents accept the marches or are willing to tolerate them, then let them through. Where the residents don't want them in their areas then they should be re-routed away from the Catholic areas.

Their constitution bans members from marrying Catholics. It seems clear to me that this, together with their annual raking up of the past, that this is a sectarian organisation designed to keep Catholics and Protestants apart. As such, it is an unwelcome barrier to good community relations up there.

As for the parades in Donegal, I don't really mind them because we in the South are free from Britain, hence the political symbolism of them when marching in the South isn't what it is in the North to northern nationalists, because we are free from the UK and thus don't feel that the South's position in the UK is being triumphalised about, as we are not in the UK no more. Even so I have often resented the coat-trailing triumphalism theese parades inflict on Northern Nationalists.

I taught it was a great idea for the Orange Order to march in Cork. When they turned down the invitation sighting security concerns. I was shocked. I was left asking myself; is there not a bigger risk when marching in N. Ireland?

I wouldn't want them marching down my street ... As such would always support residents that object to the marches in their communities.

Does anyone know the age profile of the OO? Is it an Old boys club with more members dying of than joining?

I understand it has 40,000 members, down from 100,000 some years ago.

The OO is an avowedly sectarian organisation whose sole purpose is to intimidate the Catholic population of the north of Ireland.
It should be prescribed and made illegal forthwith. The OO's only tradition is intimidation, as they demonstrated most effectively in recent weeks.

Proscribed, dear. Prescription is what happens with medication.
