    Coalition with Fianna Fáil?

What do Sinn Féin members here think about the prospect of us going into coalition with Fianna Fáil? Personally I would not support it under any circumstances as I can see little possibility of our social plan being implemented, rather we would be forced to compromise entirely and simply wind up as a Labour-esque party. Coalition with a larger party of a right-wing nature can give us no real oppurtunity to advance our political vision, I feel we would be better off consolidating our political strength and attempting to build a broad-based left wing consensus in Ireland. To do this however, we cannot rely on electoral stength alone. Electoral success is a shallow measure of power unless it is backed up with consolidation within civic society eg trade unions, resident's associations etc etc.

Please, Please stop all this talk of coalition with SF and FF, it's just nothing going to happen. As I have already stated before Grassroots FF WONT stand for it and I would predict mass walkout.

Sure. Just like coalition with the PDs.

Maybe I'm being too cynical. The FF grassroots are, of course, known for their devotion to political principle and to going the right thing for the country, over and above narrow party interest.

well perhaps TK is a different kettle of fish smiffy, but i have spoken to many many members of grassroots FF and they would seem to be in agreement with me.

    AND VISE VERSA

Sinn Fein should not go near FF---none of SF supporters can stand them.

In actual fact I would be delighted if it was the one thing that all the opposition parties agreed on publicly---none of us will join FF in a coalition --despite what members of those partys think of each other.

The primary purpose of all the opposition parties should be --no more bertie ahern or PD/FF in government]

Fianna Fáil are probably the most unprincipled party in the country and I can see them becoming willing to join with any party if it meant they remained in government. It was already touted by Dermot Ahern and was only retracted after events blamed on the IRA, in light of recent events that excuse has been negated. As for their grassroots, there are a substantial number of Fianna Fáil members who in their crude, misguided nationalism, deludedly view Sinn Féin as some sort of a sister party.

There's also the trifling matter that FF claim they won't go into coalition with SF.

I would say about 40 to 50% of FF grassroots, certainly in the FF homelands, would not have a problem with a coalition with SF now that it has decommissioned.

Personnally i do not think the time is right for Sinn Féin to enter coalition with anyone, to early in the modern progression of the party to get involved in Government, lets find our feet first.

Want to bet........TH? Suppose that after counting the numbers that the PDs have not enough seats, and on the other side you have FG/Labour/Greens.....Bertie MUST then, depending on the numbers, go in with SF and Independents................ Get real TH, when FF made the PDs their bed partners they will not go into Opposition on principle that they have to coalesce with SF. There are, of course, lots on provisos, but, one thing is certain FF would coalesce with ANYBODY rather than be in Opposition.
