Sinn Fein vote for the Bin Tax

After their poor result in the General Election Sinn Fein obviously believe that a further turn away from community politics and towards the centre will claw back some of their support. A very public display of this was 2 of their councillors in Dublin voting for the Bin Tax. Cynically enough, none of their councillors in areas where the anti bin tax campaign is still active voted for the tax.
A sign of things to come from the ex-radicals.

Congratulations to SF on adopting the principle of the polluter paying for their own waste.

I'll be cllr for this one - You know that waste management is a reserved function of the city/county manager and not in the control of the councillors?
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.

Perhaps not, but the budget is in the control of the councillors and to pass an estimate containing bin charges as a major element is a de facto acceptance of them.

Well said but it is a welcome turn about for SF after all and I expect more will vote for the Estimates next year.

same in waterford co council. sinn fein councillor welcomed the co managers proposals regarding waste charges.
Definitely a major shift in sinn fein thinking since the general election, which will probably see sinn fein councillors supporting council budgets around the country.

sinn fein are fast becoming indistinguishable from the othet parties at local govt level

I never had a problem with the idea of paying for waste disposal - my beef has always been that its another stealth tax, designed to boost the revenues of inneficient county councils. If I was sure that the revenue went solely towards waste management, I wouldnt mind so much.

That said, I fully the support the idea of pay per weight systems and I think SF are simply doing the sensible thing.
If I could mass-sterilise the planet, I would. Seriously.

    Fair play to SF.

About time they realised that our waste disposal resources are a shared and finite community resource and that people who use more than their fair share should pay for the privilege.
The only way to change the world is to win elections.

I'm not opposed to paying for waste but I think the system is unfair (in Fingal at least). If you have children it is most likely you will produce more waste than that of a household that does not and you will therefore incur higher charges. This just amounts to penalising households with children. I think it would be more equitable if a flat charge was applied to each household, and also measured on household incomes

    e.g
Household income < €25,000 no charge
    €25,001 to €40,000 charge = €100 pa
    >€40000 charge = €150pa
    >€55,000 charge = €200pa etc..etc.
The figures are for illustration only to make the point.
