    Sinn Fein and PSNI

West Belfast MP Gerry Adams, President of Sinn Féin, will co-host a meeting tonight in the Upper Springfield area of the constituency to which he has invited PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde for the first time.

Mr Adams extended the invitation at a meeting last week with Hugh Orde and PSNI Commanders to discuss community concerns about policing in the upper Springfield area. It comes amidst engagement over recent months by community leaders and local political representatives with a range of other statutory bodies and public authorities in an effort to tackle anti-social behaviour and criminality in Ballymurphy.

    Mr Adams said:

"Only a tiny minority of people are engaged in this totally unacceptable behaviour. The vast majority of citizens in this area are law abiding and responsible people. This initiative has two purposes: to effectively tackle anti-social and criminality for the people of Ballymurphy and wider community in the upper Springfield area; and to ensure through engagement between republican communities and the PSNI that people get the policing service we are entitled to.

"In the build up to tonight's meeting, a Task Force involving statutory, community and local elected representatives for the upper Springfield has been meeting over the last three months."

"Sinn Féin is working to open new space for the local community and criminal justice agencies, especially the PSNI, to work together and fulfil their obligations to uphold the rights of those who want to live in Ballymurphy in safety and peace, free from intimidation and threat."

"There is a responsibility on Hugh Orde and his colleagues to play a positive role in a multi-agency strategic approach under the auspices of the Upper Springfield Safer Neighbourhoods Forum, where community organisations and statutory agencies can critically engage in ensuring the safety of the local community."

She either highlighting the moves by SF into what is considered main stream policing issues and accpetance thereof, or she is showing that SF has caved into the British establishment. Take your pick. Adams is portraying the move more in the light of a restorative/community justice scheme. In any case, it is a significant departure from the previous SF stance. As such it is note worthy.

Very true, Rocky. Personally I think she is erring more towards the "look how normal and acceptable we have become" stance.
At the moment IMHO Sinn Fein are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't.

What is the best method of obtaining genuine, just, law and order in Ballymurphy?

It must be admitted that there could be a better quality of life there.

You may not get too many on here answering that specific question as they will be too busy having a go at Sinn Fein.

I do not miss war, i am not a journalist but as a republican there has to be a better way than inviting the RUC in, sure everyone knows half the rugrats are £10 touts for that same force.

This is an act of leadership by Gerry Adams, of a responsible and very positive kind. Republicans need to be encouraged to engage with the PSNI to make better local communities. Sinn Fein have taken a positive decision on policing by Sinn Fein, and are following that decision through with action. Of course Hugh Orde will be held to account in all of this by residents in republican areas, who have been very critical of the PSNI for failing to take a much more proactive, stronger and swifter role against crime and local hoods who have been terrorising local people. PSNI response speeds need to be improved.

sure most of these hoods are used as informers by the PSNI/RUC and all this talk about holding him to account is a load of nonsense
