Newry Deputy Mayor quits Sinn Féin over PSNI

The city of Newrys deputy mayor Martin Connolly has dramatically quit the Provisional Sinn Fein party over its decision to support and work with the British police . He resigned from the party shortly after its Ard Feis decision to participate in the PSNIs structures and collaborate with it fully . Connolly is the second high profile member of Sinn Fein in the Newry area to resign from the party in recent weeks over its activities with the British forces . Its believed he'll continue to serve on the local council as an independent .

At least he has the courage to accept that the PSNI affair is a betrayal to the freedom of Ireland. I hope more Sinn Féiner's follow his resignations for the dignity of the Irish nation. The PSNI must be destroyed, not embraced. Adams is working hard to get the people to inform enmass, so he is guaranteed his English wages from Stormont. Adams is no different that Donaldson.

I'm assuming the other is supposed to be Davy Hyland. While Davy would have been critical of policing, so are/were a lot of people who stayed. The fact that he wasn't selected for the Assembly election might have played some part do you not think?

He went on holiday instead of showing up at a convention?

To be fair to Martin Connolly he stayed and argued his case and then when Sinn Féin decisively took a decision he disagreed with he left.

While I disagree with him, and while I am sad he left, he has adopted an honourable course, and I hope he continues to do good work for his constituents outside of Sinn Féin.

Interesting to note that Connolly replaced the previous SF councillor in the area Martin Cunningham, who himself was forced from the party for holding 'traditional' republican views.
