Fake news, fake photographs, and Myanmar

In a useful piece of investigative journalism the BBC has sleuthed out the origins of pictures of dead [Rohinga] bodies and 'terrorists' posted on social media.
Myanmar conflict: Fake photos inflame tension - BBC News

The photos used by a Turkish vice-Prime Minister, are unidentified bodies possibly from a flood, the two grieving orphans who were in Rwanda, a woman and murdered man in Aceh, Indonesia 2003 and the fourth photo of people wading in a flooded waterway predates the current news stories.
On other media are dramatic photos of 'Rohinga terrorists' shooting, which turn out to be Bangladeshies photographed in the war there in 1971.

While one is grateful to the BBC for bringing the fake news phenomenon ( in the age of the 'universal journalism of all mankind') to light; one should regret that the Fakers have achieved an objective- getting the suffering of vulnerable people, who are being ethnicly cleansed from their own country, discounted and disbelieved.

    That is frequently an objective.

    (1) Beginners Fake News - Get a lie out there that is believed.

    (2) Intermediate Fake News - Get a lie out there that is swiftly discredited casting a dubious light on what is a genuine issue.

    (3) Advanced Fake News - Get so many lies and rebuttals out there no one believes anything at all.

Just wait till the Islamic countries - Turkey and Iran are already making noises - start to support the Rohingan people and there will be full 24-hour coverage.

For the moment our woman Aung San Suu Kyi is charmingly in charge and there is nothing to see.

"Human beings the world over need freedom and security that they may be able to realize their full potential," she once said but that was before her government launched its genocidal attack on the Rohinga minority.

She has the practice and the experience. I think one would have to take her seriously on an issue such as this.

ARSA is a direct response to the lack of intervention by Aung San Suu Kyi on the persecution of the Rohingya. There was great hope that she would intervene on their behalf but nothing was forthcoming. Many say her hands are tied (she has no say over what the military do). Speaking out would alienate her from her supporters and the next election could see here ousted.

Never mind all that, she is actually making things worse. Instead of saying nothing her office have issued inflammatory statements (Accusations that the Rohingya burned down their own villages, that international aid agencies are actively assisting ARSA)

Her foreign ministry have also said they will not issue visas to members of a Human Rights Council fact finding trip.

    Ultimately she's a toothless tiger...
