It's a well known fact that Saudis regularly indulge in alcohol, sex parties and drugs. Not surprising either when you consider that the society is ultimately super materialistic and wealth obsessed - when you see them driving around in their sports cars, building their luxury skyscrapers you see a society devoted to hedonism with a veneer of religious fanaticism, hedonism is no respecter of piety. They are very much like the early Protestants who also were steeped in an obsession with material wealth and the notion that wealth equates to your personal favor with God and both were enthusiastic destroyers of spiritual sites teaching that religion should be stripped down to words from the holy book.

The dominoes of "moderate Islam" are tumbling. Soon the Liberals wont be able to point to any outside Europe to deny the reality of the overwhelming propensity of Muslim countries to be theocratic tyrannies. Albania and Bosnia are different perhaps because of a more recent Christian history and the Communist secular influence but there have been arrests over Jihadism there too.

Just like travelling across the border to Donegal in the early 90's.

I suspect a lot of it has to do with the inherent contradictions of a political ideology that masquerades as spirituality.

Bear in mind thst which Salmsn Rushdie said about the obsession with proclaiming male desire as honourable ( even when it is immoral, selfish and psychotic ( and branding female desire as shameful ( even when it is loving, moral and natural ).

It is men that are involved in this. Even though it is proscribed brhaviour, it is consequential to entire ethos of man dominance and female under expression.

Which explains the obsession with control to prevent it from happening. Which probably makes it even more desirable.

Small wonder that the other theocracy in the region, Iran, is rife with drug abuse. Once drugs get inyo an Islamic country the consumption level completely exceeds even the most secular liberal of societies.

Very nuanced article - not black and white but the following is significant regarding the Christian politician Ahok who was then governor of Jakarta:

..This gubernatorial race, at any rate, was an identity free-for-all, with FPI exhorting voters not to back a non-Muslim, mosques erecting banners that they wouldn’t bury Ahok voters, and Baswedan promising to create Muslim-friendly (alcohol-free) nightlife in Jakarta.

The strategy worked well and remarkably fast. By February, 70 percent of registered Jakarta voters approved of Ahok’s performance as governor, according to a survey — but more than half of those people said they would not vote for him because they felt he had offended Islam. Now that the cat is out of the bag, it may usher in a generation of Indonesians who cast their votes on explicitly religious lines....
