Clinging on to power until the barrel goes over the waterfall.

By the way, I loved this bit:

Finally, I condemn the unlawful, very carefully timed, ill-motivated betrayal of confidence by someone with access

I wonder was he referring to Sam Smyth this time? Or was it a case of he knows what he knows.

Sam Smyth must be in a real pickle over the line to take on this one.

Couple this with the new 'evoting scandal' waste of public resources of Thornton Hall (as opposed to the PD implemented, ongoing waste in private healthcare), and what a thoroughly appalling start this is for the New Leader....

Government still wasting public money – Boyle
McDowell bought prison lands for eight times the market value (article by Frank Connolly, Justine McCarthy and Vincent Browne )

    From Gormley's response above,

Today Bertie Ahern said that he had never put his private interests ahead of the pubic good. Fianna Fáil and the PDs have always put vested interests ahead of the public good.

The new neo-conservative PDs will continue to do this under the leadership of Michael McDowell.

Thats a fair assessment from the tanaiste and its no surprise either. Obviously in politics people will be expressing opinions based on their own agenda and maybe there is a bit of that here too, I wonder if the PDs held the balance of power would McDowell have pulled the plug. In any case its irrelevant now and this controvorsy will blow over.

    There goes the PD's credibility.

Does anyone with half a brain believe that these were ever "loans"?

In a quieter moment that thought did occur to me today, imagine FF and the PDs were in opposition when a story like this broke about a taoiseach, it would have been the Alamo in the dail today. Poor auld blueshirts hadn't the balls to go for it

I think you are misreading their intentions.

They want public opinion to turn against him. Nothing would hamper that more than a ham-fisted roasting by the opposition.

Ahern has a bigger standing in middle Ireland than either Kenny or Rabbitte.

In addition, Ahern cut a pathetic figure in the Dail today. It's not easy to kick a man when he's down.
