'Liberal' PDs and the Criminal Justice Bill

Just wondering did any Liberal PDs challenge Mcdowell this weekend over his proposed Criminal Justice Bill. Its a drachonian Iliberal piece of Legislation which gives powrs of initiative to a Gardai force already under investigation for corruption. under this bill Gardai will be able to give out on the spot fines to people if they deem fit and the only evidence he or she needs is their opinion that the person is in breach of the Law. Also stipulated in this bill is increased detention, denial of a persons right to withdraw a statement, the power to retain DNA samples and allowing superintendents to issues search warrants. Surely the PDs a 'liberal' party would feel a little uneasy about this any takers?

I'm not a PD but am a liberal.

Key concept: Liberty has to be protected.

Well, we know why the statement changes were made, after that little ************************ gave two fingers to the system for witness intimidation.

DNA sampls from murder suspects? I got no problem with that (neither do most people who already think scum get off to light).

and in fairness the Garda reform bill to establish a new ombudsman and a system of checks and balances is coming in along side that.

If you want to attack mad mike for un-liberal laws try the Intoxicating Liquer Act 2003

or not repealing section VI of the offences against the state act.

I detect a note of sarcasm in your post (?) but not sure if there are any liberal PD's left at this stage.

But I agree with your points about this bill - and when are we going to see some real Garda reform? Not under this Minister anyway.

What about McDowell's proposal for national ID cards? Even the Tories are against that one (although in their case it's probably just because they didn't think of it first).

Has he brought that in? No

I'm totally opposed to that idea (would cost a fortune too)

I think that would have been the obvious conclusion arising from my use of the phrase "proposal for"

Have you ever considered that you might be in the wrong party?

I'm not a PD, but from talking to a few of them in the last few weeks I think Mick is in the wrong parrty.

Why don't they do something about it then?

I only know 3 PDs but from what they tell me Micks leadership chances are limited.
They can't really do anything about him other than internally oppose the parts of his agenda they don't like.
