One in Four director set to run for PDs

Both the Irish Times and Irish Independent are reporting that the director of the One in Four organisation Colm O'Gorman is expected to announce today that he will seek to run for the Progressive Democrats in the Wexford constituency in the next general election.

RTÉ reports that the PDs have announced they are holding a news conference this morning at which it is expected the party will confirm that Mr O'Gorman is to be a prospective candidate for them.

In my opinion, crazy move for O' Gorman. No doubt that he is a strong advocate for what he has being pursuing over the last few years, but hitching himself to the PD's smacks of a cynicism that maybe Parlon could pull off, but not O' Gorman.

He'll crash and burn in Wexford and that will damage him afterwards in his other campaigns.

    Bad move

In fairness ROC, I think his campiagn has pretty much run its course. He was an excellent representative for victim of child abuse, but that issue can only go so far. Most of the issue regrading convictions and compenstation are being sorted out.

Its quite likely Colm O'Gorman is a supporter of the PDs for idealogically reasons. I'm sure if he joined SF you guys would be harping on about his love for Irleand and Socialism.

Having said, that its does come across as another episodoe of 'I'm a Celebrity, get me a PDs nomination'. The PDs are all about winning seats. There's nothing wrong with this, but it does show how they are just as personality driven as all the other main Irish parties.

I do not expect him to win a seat here. But he should poll repectivly.

Its great to see people of ability and conviction seeking to represent the county.

I don't think it is particulary cynical as running for the PDs in Wexford is as close to political suicide as possible.

Whether it will damage his other campaigns depends purely on the prejudices of other people - something that he has overcome already.

Did he explain why he chose the PDs over the other parties?

There's going to be a press conference at 12pm.

On one level, I think it's a bit of a coup for the PDs (and as eurocrat has said, ROC's criticism just comes across as sour grapes), but as eurocrat also pointed out, it shows up the precarious nature of the PDs existence that they are dependent on poaching big-name people from outside the party to have any chance of winning seats.

What are the odds on Eddie Hobbs being the next PD Superstar?

I think it is somewhat hypocritical as he joins a party which is part of a government which has been fairly weak when standing up against the church
He also risks the making Clerical Abuse a partisan issue

I doubt Eddie would if he had seen the "Rip off Ireland more myth than reality" part of their website...

It does indeed seem they are dependent on fighting every election as if it were their last, and rely on personality politics of FF or FG rather than fighting for their platform.
