PDs to debate pre-election pact with FF

The Progressive Democrats will debate a motion calling on the party to enter a pre-election pact with Fianna Fáil, when they meet in Limerick this weekend for their national conference. The motion calling for a pact with Fianna Fáil has been submitted by Sierna Campbell from the Meath East constituency, who ran for the party in last year's byelection in Meath and who has been selected to contest the next general election. - Irish Times

Marvellous. The Govt isn't popular by that FF isn't popular. The PD's wont be able to revive their fortunes unless they can somehow distance themselves from FF (see McDowell running up a lamp post). A pre-election pact means they are both tied to a possible sinking ship.

It won't be passed, of course. Its only to get a debate going I should think.

Such a silly idea. By not running with FF, voters who dislike FF won't be put off the PDs and fans of the current government can still vote for them. If they run with FF, they'll have to defend the entire government's record, a tricky thing to do since they've already got two tough portfolios.

It would also add further to the image of the PDs as an FF sister party.

    PDs decide to reject FF

Is that a likely headline come Monday?

PD decide to reject pre-election pact with FF would be a more accurate headline.

Can not really see this as being benefical for either party. Generally not a fan of pre-election pacts anyways. Parties should just run on theior own platform and make pacts after the election. Voters are smart enough to know likely coalitions and will preference accordingly.

I think I would prefer if this motion wasn't debated. FF aren't the most popular party with the PD grass roots. It could get nasty.

Would the "grass roots" prefer FG, would you say?
