socialism is the means of production being held in common by the workers. Thats what it is, the people who coined the term hundreds of years before you were born believed that, and their ideas have been carried through the ages.
Wealth redistribution means that their is still inequaklity of outcome right? Well thats the central tenet which Socialists reject. Adam Smith(foudner of capitalism as we know it) believed that the society he laid out would have inequality iof outcome but be redistributive, so are you going to claim adam smith as a socialist. I agree with your observations regarding the present British Labour party, they have departed from socialist values and that is reflected in the fact that they are just above the US in the wealth distrubtion league.
