Harney's Trip to Superbowl cost taxpayer €190,000

    From today's independant:

"During the trip, Ms Harney clocked up 23 hours of flying time on the government jet, spending €11,000 on hotel bills, €3,380 on food and drink and more than €11,000 hiring mini-buses to ferry her seven-member group to and from various engagements."

"According to those who were present, she looked "bored" and she and her husband left during the third quarter. She missed what was described as one of the best finals in recent memory as the underdogs, the New York Giants, beat the New England Patriots 17-14 with a late touchdown."

It adds that use of the govt jet was approved by then-Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.
    Of Course it was.

May as well get the Superbowl "Blimp" joke out of the way too

I should add - she was there officially on a dental and cancer fact-finding trip, the Superbowl was apparantly a diversion

Did she tip at 900% or something? How could you possibly have a hotel bill that high? Is There a breakdown?

    €3,380 on food and drink
Were they eating from the mini bar? the mini bar is really expensive...

and more than €11,000 hiring mini-buses to ferry her seven-member group to and from various engagements."

I'm afraid you've gotten mixed up somewhere along the way.... this is old news.

The 2009 Superbowl was between the Cardinals and the Steelers.... the Steelers (the fav's) won 27 - 23.

    EDIT:
Maybe you should just clarify that this is the old Harney - Superbowl story you're talking about, in case people think that she was at this year's one as well!

This is a really stupid and misleading thread.

If you want to gripe about the cost of fact finding trip for seven people to the US, knock yourself out.

But her trip to the Superbowl cost the Irish taxpayer nothing, in that she was invited to the event by her hosts.

The suggestion that €190k of taxpayers money was spent on a trip to the Superbowl for an Irish Minister derives from the same mindset that produces giggles when someone uses the word p.enis.

And refering to the Superbowl Blimp re. Harney is juvenile in the extreme.

I'd sooner be fat and acheived half of what Harney has than be a 10 stone nerd who has nothing to do but his life other than post sh1te on politics.ie.

So did she find the cure for cancer?

If she did, the trip might be worth that money.

So who paid for the cost of the government jet if it wasn't us?

I agree with you that personal insults relating to Mary Harney's appearance are juvenile in the extreme. I have said this on numerous occasions in the past on this forum.

On the other hand, apart from some environmental issue relating to smog in Dublin, I cannot think of a single beneficial measure achieved by Harney in office in her entire career. I mean beneficial in the sense that the public, and not some well-connected crony, actually benefitted.
