Progressive Democrats to finish up on February 28th

The Irish Times this morning reports that the Progressive Democrats are to inform the Clerk of the Dail (as Registrar of Political Parties) that they wish to be taken off the register of parties at the end of next month.

As a result, at midnight on Feb 28 - we'll be closing the PD section of the site - to a read-only P.ie Archive.

They became what they sought to destroy. Not unique among new ideological movements. But their mistake was sticking around long enough to watch what they created all fall to dust

For them to wind up at a time when the govt is talking about increasing the higher rate of tax to the rate it was when the Rainbow govt was in power, when banks are being nationalized, when emigration is restarting and borrowing like there is no tommorow has returned... is truly ironic.

They used to boast at conferences they'd put an end to all that.

Without the PDs I guess its up to the Greens now to act as the mudgaurds for Fiann Fáil. Its amazing how well the Fianna Fáil political machine uses its coalition partners to distract the public from their tomfoolery

Excellent news. I am going to a wedding on that day and thought about bringing the car. Sod it. I'll stay overnight and let rip with the celebrations.

For a party to start with such lofty ambitions, to generate such enthusiasm among those looking for a real alternative, only to betray those ideals and turn into a collection of hypocritical, spineless shytes acting as both a mudguard and doormat for Ahern and his ragbag of ideology-free turkeys was sickening to witness. And Harneys record basically tells me that it would have been better had they not been formed at all.

    Irish Times writes:
THE PROGRESSIVE Democrats will finally cease to exist on February 28th,

Sad to see them go, especially when there is clearly a market for a liberal party that has accountability as a key objective. These were the twins pillars on which the party was built, but which they forgot about in the obsession with economic growth at all costs, in the last 15 years.

However there is no question that the country has benefitted from their existence and they have made for impact on political life here in the twenty plus years they have been around than Fine Geal have made in 75.

You cannot limit the growth of government by engaging in the political machine. This is what murdered classical liberalism in the 19th and 20th centuries. We must return to the difficult and selfless task of destroying the intellectual foundations of the State in the mind of the public. The government have our schooling system, but classical liberals (libertarians) own the internet, and from here we will tear the limbs of the State apart with a fraction of the man-hours, money and none of the lying needed to win office.
