Fiona O'Malley to contest 2012 election for FF

I heard from a journalist that Fiona O'Malley will not contest the Dublin South by-election, in a deal which will see her unvailed as an FF candidate for FF in Dublin South in 2012.

This appears to be confirmed by PD posters here

Has anyone heard anymore about this?

Sounds like Fiona's done alright out of this deal if it turns out to be true. Government candidates don't always do very well in by-elections so she'd be far better off waiting until 2012 IMHO.

She's a decent character who is well able to hold her own and I fully support her socially liberal agenda. In fact it was a combination of her friendliness, approachability and her socially liberal viewpoint which convinced me to give her a 1st preference the last time out...... not that it had much of an impact in the end!

Yeah, I've heard this from some people in FF and the PDs, that it could be a Corrigan O'Malley ticket in 2012.

If this is true, it must be very frustrating for the PD members. If she feels the party's no longer viable, will she resign her unelected Seanad seat and let a more committed PD take on the challenge, if the members want to continue?

How would a more committed PD take up the seat? It's in the gift of the Taoiseach. You realised she didn't win an election to the Seanad? Actually come to think of it, I got more votes for the Seanad than Fiona did, can I not have the seat?
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.

I'll believe it when I see it. 2012 is a very long time away. There are a lot of people who would feel far more entitled to a place on that ticket than O'Malley. It would cause severe party ructions.

Could be difficult if Corrigan is not candifate in Byelection. If FF candidate won, prob unlikely but never know they would not stand aside.

I better quote myself to reply to some of this:

The seat is a PD seat, just like Colm O'Gorman took the PD seanad seat of the late Senator Kate Walsh. Seemingly based on that example if a PD (or any other party for that matter ) was to resign a PD (or a any party seat) Seanad seat, then it would normally be given to another member of the same party, per the example above (seen as it is a Taoiseach's nominee). Do you get my drift?

-Well done, do you but that in your C.V.? Very impressive.

Why on earth would she do that? Doesn't make sense on any level.
