“Irish people sold a pup by Sinn Fein on Lisbon" - Cannon

Irish people sold a pup by Sinn Fein on Lisbon

    Friday 1st August 2008

    Statement - Progressive Democrats

As Italy has ratified the Lisbon Treaty, Progressive Democrat party leader, Senator Ciaran Cannon, has described as “completely disingenuous and utterly baseless” the claim made by Sinn Fein during the Lisbon campaign that a NO Vote would force the rest of Europe into renegotiating the treaty.

“Europe is marching on without us. It has been seven weeks since we rejected Lisbon and any well informed and impartial observer can now only conclude that there will be no renegotiation of the Lisbon treaty. It took seven years and the collective efforts of 27 countries to produce the text of the treaty. Italy has ratified the Lisbon Treaty and in a very short time all 27 countries, with the exception of one, will be in the same position. The other 26 have no intention of entering into another round of protracted negotiations.

The Irish people were sold a pup by Sinn Fein. The repeated claims made by Sinn Fein representatives during the campaign that a NO Vote would force a renegotiation were completely disingenuous and utterly baseless”, said Cannon.

He continued “Sinn Fein were shameless in using the Lisbon campaign as a vehicle to enhance their electoral prospects. Perhaps people should have become wary when they began talking about protecting Ireland's corporate tax regime? This from a party who only a few months earlier were suggesting that we needed to raise corporation tax?”

“We, the Irish people, would be well advised to steadfastly refuse any guidance from Sinn Fein on this or any other matter of national importance.”

Despite a consistent line from Brussels that renegotiation was a non-starter this line was relentlessly peddled by the No side. You can't negotiate on your own, there has to be willingness from all parties. SF, Libertas and others conveniently ignored this throughout the campaign.

They can all go through the farce of ratifying it but it means absolutely nothing as we have said no and it cannot go ahead. If they want the Lisbon Treaty to come into force then they must re negotiate or it is dead

    Europe is "One in/All in"

Really, when are the Progressive "DEMOCRATS" going to accept the "DEMOCRATIC" decision of the people ?

Seriously, who or what is Ciaran Cannon? I vaguely remember a right-wing minority party called the PDs, is he something to do with them?

    Sorry DaveM.

The race is over and the horse is on its way to a new race meeting.

Cannon and his comment is irrelevant.
Cowardice asks the question - is it safe? Expediency asks the question - is it politic?
Vanity asks the question - is it popular? But Conscience asks the question - is it right?
And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular;but one must take it simply because it is right. -MLK

Oh yeah, Burntollet and all that. No wonder he doesn't like Sinn Fein so, but they say you get more right-wing as you get older. He must be in his sixties now, he has earned the right to be patronisingly indulged and then ignored...

It's hard to believe sometimes that the PDs used to be Trotskyists, but then again José Manuel Barroso used to be a Maoist. It's interesting how the anti-democratic reflexes remain long after the ideology has evaporated.
