Dates for PD Leadership Contest Set

    According to RTÉ News
The new leader of the Progressive Democrats will be announced on 16 April.

The party's National Executive met last night and decided that nominations for the leadership would close on 5 March.

Both the party's Senators, Ciaran Cannon and Fiona O'Malley, have said they will seek the position, which is being held on an interim basis by Mary Harney.
Voting will be done via a postal vote of the ~3,400 registered paid up members of the party.

The only thing is though that we'll have to have a National Conference beforehand to ratify the neccessary constitutional changes as recommended by last weekends General Council.

Who cares they are an irrelevant party.
By 2020, 12.75Lts of petrol will cost you just under €30, today it will cost you €16.42 exactly.

I read somewhere last week that a vote by membership is completely irrelevant, because 40% of the votes are sewn up by the parliamentary party, and 30% by Councillors.

With Cannon getting at least 20% from the PP (himself and Grealish), and with a large number of councillors in the Galway area, he is likely to be very close to the line before members even get the chance to vote

On the contrary. Its a great gig.

If we crash at the locals and the party winds up then the leader will not be blamed because it will be seen as a foregone conclusion by all an sundry(especially sundry ) "and sure was'nt he/she a brave soul to take it on"

If we gain and grow after the next locals, the new leader will get all the kudos and the sun will shine from their armpits for quite a while.

    Its a win/win.

Quite amazing that they still exist, let alone are the putitive leaders of government. Every other Dail party (even the SP who did the nation some service with Gama) made a contribution in the most successful 20 years of Irish history except Fine Gael. And they still manage to fool a quarter of the country into voting for them. I wonder if they have ever considered the snake oil business.

But I see you still care about the PDs pfkf1. Why else post about them?

As for their leadership, I'd wager their won't be a contest. I'd say John Dardis is smoking in a dark room to set the atmosphere as we speak.

    PD votes
    40% of vote
    Cllrs 30% of vote
    members 30% of vote

Cannon has 30% straight away from the parl. party
He then just needs 21%, the majorty of cllrs will back him. Given that there is less than 30 cllrs (?) it would be fairly easy to figure out what way the wind is blowing. Why would FOM run if as of now its clear she won't win.
