The thing to remember about SF is that if they did get into power it would be as part of a coalition and therefore most of their most extreme ideas would be diluted.

The "left"* has never had more that a quarter of the vote in the 26 counties and in the 6 counties people are voting along cultural rather than economic/social lines so SFs vote there doesn't exactly correlate. Therefore I don't see SF in their current guise ever having overall majorities both north and south.

Whatever your feelings about SF you must admit that they are not stupid. They are already moving most of their economic policies towards the centre and aside from wondering where'd they get the money to pay for them most of their social ideas are not that crazy.

Saying that i'll never vote for them but neither would I Run Away if they got into power. I'd stand and fight (via the ballot box).

    * I personally do not like the terms "left" and "right" when discussing politics but used them as they're commonly used terms.

I left in the 80's when there was no work while Charles Haughey ate the finest beef and drank the finish champers while humping a certain female journalist.

Then came the PDs to sort out the corruption in FF and low and behold they came into power for over 12years on and off and watched over one of the most brilliant turnarounds to make Ireland an economic powerhouse.

Now SF 8) might come to power fills me with total dread. What those gangsters know about the economy and living standards could be written on a postage stamp

I'll be right behind you. I have no desire to see this country go down the toilet.
Have you had your eyes closed for the last five years? Have you not seen the state of our health service? ...the collapse in manufacturing? ...bursting property bubble? ...infrastructure? ...water quality? ...foreign policy? suicide rate?...murders?

There's a lot to problems, and the economic nightmare that is staring us in the face will call for hard decisions to be made. The PDs have been blinded by their ideology, and failed to recognise the suffering it caused, and for them to remain in power would consign the poorest and most vulnerable of our society to hopelessness.
    coles,

i may not agree with your politics, but that has to be the best post of the day!

Looks like I will be staying abit longer

The left wing nutters are not taking over the country just yet.

The Irish people in the infinite wisdom have rejected them.

While we may not be part of the government I can handle a center right government and keep those shinners out and let a real government continue to keep this country on a rising tide.
