McDowells claim about FARC-SF connection in tonights debate

Just wondering if he could be sued for libel on this (or does he have immunity as he is MOJ)? I cant remember exactly how he put it but he claimed SF received $25 million dollars for training FARC or something to that effect. now whether it is true or not is another issue, i personally doubt it, but surely SF would want to stop these sort of remarks being thrown at them.

He'll do what he did in the Daily Ireland libel case.. and hide behind his office.

Here's a man who publicly admitted handing over Garda files to a newspaper, to ruin a mans reputation, because the Gardai themselves did not have enough evidence to convict the man.

i think tonight may not have been the place to bring it up but ppl should be reminded that there's still that element to SF and as adam's himself siad "we havn't gone away you know" .......

i've no issue with ppl voting for SF but they should be reminded of the dark side as well as the recent postive news from norn iron.

no doubt i'll be slammed now

For a remark to be libelous, it has to reduce your standing amongst your peers.

Given that most of Gerry Adam's peers would give him a clap on the back for such a noble fundraising effort, the case would be thrown out of court.

In the Daily Mail case he used Dail Privilege.

In this case Gerry could sue. McD's defense would be that this comment could not serve to lower the opinion of Adams in the eyes of a right thinking member of society. he would have several grounds for claiming so. I won't go in to these personally.

It's up to McDowell to stand up his allegations. There was no evidence produced against the three guys either here or in Colombia.

If adams denies in court he was never on the provisional army council he would lose quite easily.

McDowell may be an awful excuse for a minister but hes not entirely stupid.

His use of the Pinochet defence in the Daily Ireland case - l'etat c'est moi - was appropriate because this is a guy who's a wannabe dictator. Some dictatorships do work for a while - the trains do run on time. That's the period when a dictator has a vision and is decisive and prompt at making decisions and implementing them. McDowell's problem is, of course, that he can't stop changing his mind. He's a ditherer of the highest order - first he's supporting Ahern, next he's not, next he is again. And he does make decisions, they're the wrong ones, like siting the new prison at Thornton Hall, a site which was extraordinarily priced.

The claim has no grounds in fact. It's all a product of narcotics fuelled fantasists - aka known as Sunday Indo/World journalists - who know a great deal more about cocaine use than is healthy.

The proposal that holiday homes will be charged commercial rates has to be opposed as one of the great names in THE PEACE PROCESS would have to put his hide away up for sale
