Drop the Apostrophe or the Puppy Dog Gets it!

A constant source of head banging for me is people's insistence on using PD's with an Apostrophe. It is plural people! Rule 1 of Grammar, Apostrophes are used in the possessive, not the plural. Don't make me beat ye all upside the head with a dictionary, I will if I have to.

    Plural is: 5 PDs',
possessive is: the PD's ridiculous manifesto.

No, the plural is 'five PDs'.

It is almost as annoying as people describing Michael McDowell as the 'Progressive Democrat leader'.

He's not. He's the 'Progressive Democrats leader'. Even "the Progressive Democrats' leader" would be acceptable.

5 PDs' is only correct if you are using plural possessive. The 5 PDs' ridiculous manifesto, for instance (because you have specified the number of PDs, rather than using it as a collective term. Though come to think of it, 'the PD's ridiculous manifesto' would only be correct if you were referring to one individual PD... ).

In short, don't use an apostrophe when generally referring to them.

Don't worry. You won't have to use the plural conjugation as much when you only have 1 TD.

They should have gone with The Radical Party. Would have avoided all this sort of confusion.
But I think you should let the Puppy have it anyway, as a warning to others.

    That should be:

    Plural is: 5 PDs,
possessive is: the PDs' ridiculous manifesto.

Wrong. The Progressive Democrats is a political party. We are taking about the organisation and not its members. It is a singular noun. Therefore, we would refer to the PD's ridiculous manifesto.

Not wrong. PD is an abbreviation. Plural of this is PDs. Possessive plural is PDs' .
