There is an interesting article in a recent New York Times: Needed: More Political Dimensions - NYTimes.com and I would have liked to have put this thread in the Political Philosophy forum but it seems to have been shut down and two of its three threads are missing.
The article's author, John Perry, is a political philosopher and he suggests that leftist, rightist is insufficient for today's politics. I agree with him. I notice that people on p.ie are considering starting up a new party, but are having difficulty finding something that is new and could really refresh the Irish political scene. There are idealists who promote amateur politicians like Barack Obama and (as usual) are sadly disappointed. There is also a "Pirates party" based on thieving © stuff on the Internet and tacking a few other "idealistic community" points to its policy papers to make it less of a one-item party and more attractive to naive people who can vote nevertheless.
Anyway, this diagram from the article and the article itself may give some anoraks food for thought.
I note that this diagram is already missing a dimension - "very low right crazy" which is where I'd put the Pirate Party since it is interested in stealing stuff, just like those conservative bankers have been at it for decades (and also electricity companies...).
I note Professor Perry has also written something on procrastination which won the Ig Nobel Prize in Literature for 2011 - that should be interesting as I am looking for something useless to read so I can further procrastinate the work I should be doing now that I have put this thread on p.ie...
