Here was a conference about 'How to Elect More Women.' The conference was hosted by Minster of State for equality Kathleen Lynch.

The message is that women would like to be taken more seriously and elected to the Oireachtas (on an aside, they surely can't do much worse than our menfolk...)

Women are constantly being judged on their appearance instead of on their ability and that is a barrier to equality and to women's advancement. In the middle of a conference with this setting, what does the Taoiseach do, but refer to the appearance of the woman who organised the conference?

Am glad you cleared that up. I was under the illusion, mistaken it seems, that the Conference was called 'How to make them elect more women'.

Cheer up! Things are never so bad that they can't get worse.

If I recall my brief perusal of the Indo article, he likened her undoubted political commitment to the cliche about red heads being more spirited?

I am not sure that I would be all that upset if I was a redhead and the Taoiseach praised me while making a cliched joke?

As for being judged on appearance, yes that is true, but in this case it was not a negative assessment?

Plus, ever hear the comments made about the likes of Jackie Healy Rae, Mattie McGrath, Mick Wallace and their appearance? That judgement is not confined to women, happens to everybody.

I wonder if Red Hugh ONeill ever complained that he was being judged on his appearance. Or Red Adair the famous fire-fighter.

I'm not sure that too many women at the conference were that upset. There were eyes up to heaven alright and applause when Oliva O'Leary chided him over the remark but not much else.

It's a pity that this story has detracted from the excellent contributions made that day from leading politicians, academics and activists. The discussion over the real issue of how political parties are going to make this legislation work in a meaningful manner needs to happen soon.

Why did Minister Phil Hogan drop the independent review into planning irregularities within Dublin and Cork city councils and Carlow, Meath, Galway and Cork county councils ?

How many women candidates did FF run in the last election? Not one of them was elected.

If all the parties are in favour of quotas why do they not just get on with it. There is no need for a law.
