Why has this man been chosen, time and time again above all others, to prepare major economic reports for the future of the Irish state ?

Intrestingly, Colm McCarthy was also Charlie Haughy's (and Ray McSharry's) favourite economist.

The Expenditure Review Committee (more commonly known as An Bord Snip) was an advisory committee established by the Irish Government in 1987 to recommend cuts in state spending. The committee was established by the then Taoiseach (prime minister), Charles Haughey, and the Minister for Finance Ray MacSharry. It was a three-man committee comprising two senior civil servants, Sean Cromien and Bob Curran, and a private sector economist, Colm McCarthy.

I was 6 during the first bord snip nua report, but his more recent report seemed to have realistic and good suggestions on how savings could be made given the massive excesses in spending by the state. He's also been a good media performe (esp his appearances on Frontline) where he's been able to put across views quite blunting and in an easy to understand way.

McCarthy is very bright, hard working and most importantly has a huge sense of public duty. He is unafraid to take on vested interests (be they public servants, trade unions, political parties or cartels). He just wants more efficiency, hence his forgoing payment for An Bord Snip Nua. Even though he doesn't publish much, he has enormous respect from peer economists. He is a true public servant.

I read the health briefing documents to Bord snip nua.It was interesting to note what was left in and what was left out. Those that were obvious to me were left out, and some of the unneccessary were left in!

That makes him (McCarthy) the economist...and me, the Health worker..!
How MUCH of the 1987 report was implemented I wonder??
    Very difficult to find out.
    As to why McCarthy?
    Sure why Peter Bacon???????

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not.

He is articulate, plain speaking and to the point. Exactly the kind of person we need examining the issues.

He's not really. He's just another arrogant PD from the Doheny and Nesbitt's School of economics who devises grand schemes on the back of beer mats that destroy people's lives. It was their type of economics that caused the crash.
