"The Egyptians could run to Egypt, the Syrians into Syria. The only place we could run was into the sea, and before we did that we might as well fight.” -Golda Meir
One of the few times I disagree with Pat. Not about the burqa itself, just about the ban.
Firstly I dont this. As it isnt funny, nor is it making any valid points. Plus there was a thread on this yesterday, so I have reported this thread to be closed.
I agree. I wonder whether RTE would invite him on- which show would be the most suitable?
Or we could solve the whole Angelus to-and-fro by having alternate evenings where a religious standup could have a minute on evening and Pat Condell the next evening. As long as its scheduled in the paper with (R) for religious on it or (NR) Non-Religious advisory codes no one at all should be offended as the warnings are clear.
What do you think? More inclusive of all religions and none etc etc.
Burka this and burka that.
It seems like any time any politician wants to get a bit of free air time, score a few cheap points and distract from major issues, the ol' 'ban the burka' tirade comes out. As I've said before, how big an issue is the 'burka' that it deserves so much attention? Is it worn by more than a tiny minority of women in any European city? Is there really nothing more important for this man to rant about?
And I won't even get started on the usual strawmen about 'cultural relativism' or feminists supposedly defending the oppression of women. Nothing new to see here. Move along.
Who te hell is he?
A poster of some consequence...
Condell has said of his humour "I used to talk about this stuff in comedy clubs until I discovered internet video. Now I get a lot more death threats, but I don't have to deal with drunks."
Plenty of him up on Youtube, great character !
I don't agree entirely with him always, but occasionally he makes a valid point. Here, he is making a legitimate point about the deafening silence from feminists, a particular groups of post-menopausal cranks that use every opportunity to whine about anything. Why aren't feminists exercised about the burqa?
You see,the problem is, when people say these kinds of things about women, it's very hard to believe that they have jumped on the ol' burka bandwagon because they 'care about women'. I don't think they care a toss about women, Muslim or otherwise. Rather, as I've said, it's an easy way to get attention and whip up hysteria.a particular groups of post-menopausal cranks that use every opportunity to whine about anything.
If the 'burka' isn't that big an issue for many feminists, perhaps that's because..... it isn't that big an issue, full stop. Even if we assume (perhaps incorrectly) that most women in Europe who wear 'burkas' do not do so out of choice, we're still talking about a very small number of women, relatively speaking. Really, there are far bigger issues facing women in Europe than whether or not a few thousand women are being 'forced' to wear 'burkas'.
