It's hardly surprising. Some select quotes:

On Italian secretaries (comments made at the New York stock exchange):

"Italy is now a great country to invest in... today we have fewer communists and those who are still there deny having been one. Another reason to invest in Italy is that we have beautiful secretaries... superb girls."

At the Brussels summit at the end of Italy's EU presidency, in December 2003:

"Let's talk about football and women." (Turning to four-times-married German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder.) "Gerhard, why don't you start?"

Promising to put family values at the centre of his campaign:

"I will try to meet your expectations, and I promise from now on, two-and-a-half months of absolute sexual abstinence, until [election day on] 9 April."

The Vatican stepped in, indeed it was on the Nine Pm news last evening:

Catholic Church tells Silvio Berlusconi to curb his wandering eye - Times Online

Interesting that the cardinal has slapped the wrist of the Premier regarding his public role and how that is perceived.

Come on now, if you were a male prime minister of Italy, would you not be tempted to appoint a lot of hot women to the cabinet for eye candy during cabinet meetings?

And if you were female Italian prime minister, would you not be tempted to appoint a cabinet of hot males, well ladies?

Do you honestly think a cabinet of bimbo lingerie models, etc would do worse than our current Irish government which is also made up of airheads? Hands up if you do.

I do not think that a woman's attractiveness (or no) should be an issue; but I do think if the wife of the premier and mother of his children
makes a statement that he is playing around in a public way with women just barely into their majority and embarrasing his children that it
    should be listened to.

Afterall little model who calls him Papi Silvio age of 18 and lingerie model wants an seat- FFS- she has no experience and wishes a
parachute. he is dishonouring his own family by acting like Super-viagra man and Mrs B was annoyed quite specifically at the fact that he
attended the 18 year old's party but never bothered his well rounded Italian bum with his own children- how do ya think his daughter feels ?

The Itailans are all about the physical now - eat, drink, wear. Abstract is declining.

A good book about this is 'Dark Heart of Italy' by Tobias Jones.

    There you go.
