I've always been fascinated by this place and its Irish connections, particularly the accent which has endured.
The late writer Pete Mc Carthy had a book called "The road to McCarthy" where he visited Monserrat. If you have read McCarthy's Bar, you will know that the outcome was both insightful and hilarious.
Not sure if I'd like to live on an island with people with a hybrid south Munster/Caribbean accent. It'd be like a cross between Bob Marley and Pat Spillane! *shudder*
A group of people came from Barbados a few years ago to Drogheda to trace their ancestors. They believed they were descended brom people shipped out after Cromwell took the town in 1649. I don't know if anything more has developed from that trip, but I would be all for building more awareness of these historical connections. Not sure its a question of 'Political Humour' though.
