    John O'Donoghue's Expenses online

I came across this, courtesy of irishelections.com and Gavin's Blog

Gavin's Blog The John O’Donoghue files (Part 1 – India)

I like this one in particular

Remember folks, when you are writing work e-mails they are potential public information, particularly if you work in the public sector.

Why should the taxpayer pay for them to tip? If they want to tip, they should be able to do it from their salary.

Re tipping I was once on a minor EU committee representing a charity and I went to Brussels for a meeting once a year. Expense claims were rigourously vetted - expected to use cheapest flights and public transport. Very intimidating list of rules. Only actual expenses occured refunded later. no round figure allowances for anything.

Now I wasn't employed by the charity so the 2 days taken up with attending the meeting was at my cost (ie loss of earnings). I recall tipping a porter €1 carrying my small case and large briefcase to my room.

Put this on my claim but no receipt and the EU accountant would not pay.

This accountant should be headhundted to deal with JOD claims?

TD claims are seen as a "bonus of the job". They do not want any accountant analysing them, or rules governing what and what is not acceptable.

Lots of accountants are now unemployed - there is a great need for them to audit politicians expenses claims. I'm sure some would happily do this as long as they could keep their dole.

It looks like there is already enough waste when people are writing letters about EUR6 payments. Imagine how much it cost for that letter to be written, transmitted and read.
