Should Martin Ferris have picked up the Mc Cabe killers?

Hearld frontpage has a pic of a TD picking up and driving home the two newly released prisoners.

    from the Irish Times Site

Hes perfectly entitled to pick up who he wants from prison.
I'm sure it wont do him any harm within republican circles.
Politically though mightn't have been too clever for either Sinn Fein or himself (a good part of West Limerick is now in the old Kerry North constituency) .

If I remember correctly these guys were members of the IRA off on an unofficial fund raising activity (i.e funds were not going back to the IRA , it was a personal profit operation)

Gerry Mc Cabe was sitting in a car i.e. not pointing a gun at anyone.

I have never understood how these guys were convicted of manslaughter and not murder.

I would love if Martin Ferris would justify this vile act of support for these killers

Ferris has been named as a member of the IRA Army Council, he was also suspected of being the head of the IRA in the South. These men are presumably his troops, or something like that. I would imagine that is his justification.

Are you really shocked at senior old guard Sinn Féin members supporting IRA killers?

Nope; just as I'm not surprised at FF/FG/LP ministers supporting British State Terrorists who deliberately murdered dozens of Irish citizens on the streets of Dublin, Monaghan, Belfast, Derry, Dundalk, Castleblaney, Belturbet, . . .But I'm surprised that they pretend to oppose violence & terrorism; well maybe not?

An IRA killer would be on IRA business. If I remember correctly these scum were on their own criminal business. Big difference!!

How exactly does that justify killing a member of An Garda Siochana carrying out his duty to prevent criminals robbing a bank??

Killing a Garda is a quasi seditious act almost by definition. It is a attack on the state personified. So what the fk is a Teachta Dála doing meeting and greeting them?

The notion that Mr. Ferris would be there representing his constituants is an insult to the mostly decent people who voted for him because they hold moderate republican or leftist views. The vast majority of them would not want their elected representative giving their thousands-strong imprimatur to these criminals. (If some Shinner wants to tell me otherwise, I'm all ears. That would be a tough sell).

Alternatively, if he was there in a private or party capacity, could he not for once in this particular instance just suck it up, show a little bit of fkn respect to the State and stay at home? Really. If a SF TD wants to backslap some guy who shot an RUC man in the 80's or bombed a barracks in the 70's, then whatever. Time has passed, we're post GFA, there were terrible things done by all sides in the 70's and 80's. Blah blah. But guys who killed an Irish Garda in 1996 during a grubby fkn robbery? Of course he has the right to meet them, but does he have to? No. Just stay at home you ignorant, disrespectful mulchie scumbag.

No!, He should not have, he should have stayed away from the whole episode. But it was just a typical stunt for SF supporters and I.R.A simphathisers, and Votes by the bag full.

I listened to Martin Ferris's interview on News talk 107fm yesterday and I was not impressed with his excuse.

Martin Ferris said he was trying to play down the release of the I.R.A prisoners to save any hurt to the McCabe family, Ferris went on to explain that he anticiapated a big turnout of media reporters. I did it to protect the McCabe family, so as not to hurt them.

Thats why he collected them in a van to avoid the press, well bully for Martin Ferris for pulling a stunt like that.
That was just like kicking mud in the faces of the McCabe family. Martin Ferris should apologise to the McCabe family, the Garda and then resign.
