    Seanad retirement age

F Quinn must be 100 years old now - how old do you need to be a Uni Senator before you retire. My vote move over Fergal and let some fresh blood into the Senate

I think he's 70, but I could be wrong. There doesn't seem to be a Wikipedia article on him.

Are you running for a Seanad seat or something?

My mistake, there is a Wikipedia article on him (aside from the somewhat brief Politics.ie one). It's here and it turns out that he's only 69.

Its a good job for Fianna Fáil that there is no Senate retirement age - they would be decimated, losing all these young bucks:

    Eddie Bohan - 74
    Peter Callanan - 71
    Rory Keily - 72
    Don Lydon - 68
    Labhrás O' Murchú - 67
    Brendan Daly - 66

A mandatory retirement age from either house of the Oireachtas is not needed. If we wanted to do something really radical we should bring in term limits.

Also elections to both houses should take place simultaneously, so that failed TDs would not get a second bite of the cherry. On top of that if one wished to run for any elected office, and one was currently elected to another position one should have to resign from the first on registering as a candidate for the second. (i.e. if an MEP wished to run in the next general election they should have to resign on registering as a candidate for the Dail.

So I take it that you would resign from your position of employment before replying to an advertisement for another?

No Barry, I just believe that any Public Office should be treated with respect by those who would hold it. It is not comparable with regular employment.

However as a point of personal honour I have always, on realising that I no longer wished to be in a particular job, handed in my notice before looking for a new position. I have never sought a new job before handing in my notice in my old one. As I say, just a point of personal honour.

    Short answer 'Yes'.

This thread needs to be titled 'Seanad retirement age' in order to clear up ambiguity with the US. Honestly thought the thread was referring to the States and maybe to this guy

I have to say that with the possible exception of Shane Ross, I thought they were all retired anyway!
Perhaps we should discuss the retirement of the Seanad itself.............

The other side of that is Ronan Mullen who's 12 and he's not exactly a poster boy for the quality of youth.
