    Confidence Motion

It's hardly conceivable that the Greens could abstain- but Will EVERY FF Td support Cowen? Any thoughts?

Dail numbers (why is it so fupping hard to get accurate up to date numbers listed anywhere?! Even the Oireachtas' own website is useless at giving a breakdown of seats)

    FF 75
    GP 6
    Tot 81

    FG 52
    Lab 20
    SF 4
    Tot 76

There are 7 independents - Behen, Grealish, Harney, Healy-Rae, Lowry, Mc Grath, O'Sullivan.

Every FF TD will support Cowen because every FF TD is worried about their own seat and will not be prepared to bring down the Government, at least in hast and at the behest of Fine Gael.

What the hell was the big hurry with the no confidence motion, It gives Gormley the excuse that he will have to consult the grass roots, if he can find them, should have let them stew for some time, Cannot put down another one until next year,

No, it'll be december - right after the budget.

easy one.... can only have a vote of confidence vote every six months.. whats in 6 months...????

    yup, the dec 1st budget.

Kenny did this right, jump on FF while wounded, stick knife in... get greens and indo's on record as supporting them and accept you'll lose the vote... but you've nailed their colours to the mast.

Next no confidence vote.. week after budget... Kenny couldn't wait.

This is the right strategy, get the greens and the indos nailed, maybe smoke out a FF surprise (a la Behan), Lose the vote, run the real no confidence motion in December after the budget.

I think the timing of this motion is a huge political mistake on Kenny's part.

I haven't heard any commentator say that the Government could lose this vote. Most people see it as mere Leinster House theatrics.

In the meantime, out in the real world, the abuse victims had already organized a march of solidarity for tomorrow (Wednesday), to coincide with what should have been the beginning of a Dáil debate on the Ryan Report.

Assuming this march goes ahead tomorrow, much of its impact will be lost by the debate's postponement until Thursday.

After all the political verbiage regarding the need to treat the abuse victims with respect, many of them may now feel sidelined yet again.

By insisting on prioritizing this largely pointless Confidence Motion over the debate on the Ryan Report, Kenny may have shown himself to be politically inept. Whatever minor embarrassment he may cause Fianna Fáil and the Greens may be outweighed by a perception of opportunism and insensitivity.

What about the Government extending the time for debate to 10 hours of parliamentary time when FG were only seeking 4?
