    Teachers

Can someone please explain the logic of teachers who are elected as TDs being able to go back to their teaching positions when they lose out in an election?

Surely if you decide to stand as a TD you are taking a risk, but in thier case it is much less of a risk.

George Lee can go back to RTE if he loses in the election (despite him saying he lost his job).

i believe he is on leave from RTE, and can in theory return, however he has no right to return to his previous roll, he can be made tea boy if they so wish, however i believe is package would be as it was before.

Practically speaking he has however lost his job, he cannot go back to being a economic editor or any other journalistic roll as any thing he states as either negative or critical (or even that the government doesn't wasnt mentioned) can be rebuffed by them as being politically biased.....

i don't believe that that is the same experience / issue for teachers and others

they should not be able to do so, nor should any other state / semi state workers (private sector is already in that boat), once they are elected to office their previous roll and position should be terminated, perhaps even that would benefit the body politic. Only those whom really strongly felt the drive would take the risk as opposed to those whom give it a go with a nice safety net behind them....

His first lie was in his first interview when he categorically stated that he'd lost 'his job for life'. He hasn't. He's a spoofer. How many people do you think would run for government if they knew their job was secure if they failed? How many self-employed people would run knowing a job was there for them if they failed? How many plumbers, carpenters and electricians would run? Zilch, because they know they really would lose their jobs.

Not sure. But I heard George stating that he'd lost his pensionable job. He hasn't. That makes him a liar. He should fit in nicely.

i didn't hear / see / read that interview where he stated same, if you have a source do share, however to call him a spoofer and a lier is in accurate, what he has done is a very brave (in a personal context) move whether you agree or disagree with his politics

most people can run for office if they wish without their job being at risk, they can take an unpaid leave of absense, parental leave, etc for the 6 weeks or so that are required, the fact that only a very small amount of people do is a reflection on the amount of people whom want to run for office are selected and supported by their party and have any realistic chance to do so, the very few independants rarely succeed.

a self employed person can run with greater ease than a PRSI employee, assuming ones finances can support it taking time out from their jobs is easier to arrange and achieve......

also i think you'll find there are plenty of self-employed TD's and candidates, most doctors, solicitors, accountants, etc are "self employed"

I think it was on Joe Duffy but I could be wrong. Nevertheless, he said it. Comparing self-employed people to someone who can waltz straight back in to their fully pensioned job is unfair. George lied and no-one wants to admit it. He has a job after he doesn't get elected..others don't.

He's a spoofer but I don't particularly mind that he tells lies. Our levels of decency have sunk so low that blatant spoofery is acceptable.
