Former politician and head of Human Rights Commission gives up Oireachtas pension

I see that former FG TD and Senator, Maurice Manning, in reponse to last weeks budget and as a personal decision, has decided to forgo his Oireachtas pension given the current economic climate.

One wonders if anyone else might have the same good grace. Fair play to him. Hope others follow.

Now how did I guess it was hardly likely to be somebody from FF.

Fair play. Thats a start anyway. Get the rest of the 'free lunches' taken away from our esteemed public representatives.

A nice gesture...however, doesn't he have several public sector jobs already and will be drawing pensions from those?

It's bad enough that someone is double jobbing with public sector jobs, but taking two or more public sector pensions is really taking the p*ss.

I applaud him, but really it's no more than to be expected.

I would imagine that he will not be a popular guy!

He lectured for 30 years in UCD so I would imagine he has a pension from that. His present position with the Human Rights Commission is a government appointment and is not pensionable.

Just another political parasite with multiple pensions and a fat pay cheque looking for some redemption. Do these fools think that just because they take less from the public trough we should be more grateful?

Thats rather nasty. At least he is doing something unlike anyone else I can think of. Give him some credit.

They should all have it removed - it is disgusting that John Bruton, Dick Spring, Ivan Yates etc etc all take pensions when they are under 65 and still earning massive salaries - in Bruton's case from the EU taxpayer who also pay for his travel and office and car and God knows what else with no receipts or accounts being provided. So on this issue Fine Gael and Labour have as little credibility as FF.
