Kenny calls for Brian Lenihan to resign "in an act of patriotism"

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has formally called on Brian Lenihan to resign as Finance Minister following the latest revelations about Anglo Irish Bank.

Mr Lenihan has already insisted that he will not be standing down after admitting that he did not fully read a report to his department late last year relating to the activities of Irish banks.

As a result, he only learned last month that Irish Life & Permanent had transferred multi-billion euro deposits to Anglo Irish Bank before the end of the latter's financial year in September.

Mr Kenny told the Dáil this morning that Mr Lenihan should follow the Financial Regulator "in an act of patriotism" and step down from his position.

Just a few months ago Brian Lenihan invited the country to follow his government's budget by proclaiming it a "call to patriotic action"

Enda Kenny has now called on Mr Lenihan to exercise patriotism and resign in the interest of the country.

I'll start supporting Kenny when HE does something patriotically valuable instead of just shouting off his mouth. He could refuse his ministerial pension until he reaches the age of 66 and then call for the scrapping of ALL the perks that go with a position like his and his gang of merry men.

this is really rubbing it in ...

'act of patriotism' will be forever associated with that budget debacle

the ante has been raised and

    FG are going for it

if Lenihan goes, the whole government goes, they simply can't plant a new finance minister in the middle of a crisis like this

He should propose Richard Bruton as his replacement in an act of national unity, patriotism etc etc... FG control of the public purse by any means necessary. Dare he?

But that's not FG control of the public purse, because everything Bruton did would have to get through an FF cabinet. He'd be the ultimate lame duck Finance Minister. If FF want Bruton to be in Finance, they know the road to the Aras well enough by now.

In other words, anything Kenny does, you'll only be happy if he does something else.

of course, but if Bruton was to propose his own measures to the public, as he has done in his current role and present himself as the minister of finance within an FF govt, it could be different. Kenny should do it, publicise the fact that FG have someone with the intelligence to carry out the duties of the portfolio, unlike FF.

It;s a stunt i know, but fck it, we need to get rid of Lenihan as a matter of public urgency! he doesnt; read fcking reports!!! Was there no one-page non-exec summary on the front even?

I'm not suggsting FF want Bruton. But at this stage Ireland does, and this is one way of stirring it up, possibly enough to make that walk to the park

Cowen has been conspicuously absent this morning...why no defence of his beleaguered minister?
The useful idiots of Gormley and Dermot Ahern have been out, but no Cowen expressing his 'cofidence' in his minister.
So, does Cowen have confidence in Lenihan or is he, perhaps, finding all of this rather useful in damaging Lenihan and his position within Fianna Fail?
After all, the position of Minister of Finance has come to be understood as the successor-position to leader within Fianna Fail. Could politics still be being played amid this national crisis?

    Reminder:
Cowen denies tensions with Lenihan - The Irish Times - Wed, Jan 14, 2009

“There are no tensions between us at all,” he (Cowen) said.

    No tensions, hmmm...

This is the most hateful anguish of all among men, to understand much and to prevail in nothing.

    Kenny cop on

Act of patriotism? FFS. So if I mess up and because of it decide that it is best to give up, it is now patriotic. No that this just being ethical: I am not up to the job joe.

Seriuously this has to be one of the worst sentences yet.
