FG propose referendum to reduce Dail by 20%: Sunday Times

Enda Kenny is commiting to a referendum to reduce the Dail by 20% and to give the Oireachtas committees investigative powers. Of course if he was serious about it he would being forward the Referendum Bill this term to be voted on with the Local/Euro elections and lets see if FF and the Greens will vote it down.

I'd vote yes. I like the sound of giving teeth to committees.

I think its fair to say this would run with the electorate.
Its only a chat, we ain't the world council.
In 2000 the Women's Institute in Britain gave Tony Blair the slow hand clap to demonstrate their contempt.
It was dignified, restrained and effective.Doesn't Bertie deserve the same scorn. No shouting, no abuse, no agression just a relentless slow clap whenever he speaks in public would be enough to end that man's presidential fantasy.

On principle I agree with Enda . I wonder how moves to reduce the number of TDs would effect the smaller parties and independants would it be a blow against democracy .

I also ask the question why he did not bring this proposal before the recent General election .

A reasonable suggestion but wouldn't change a thing.

We need a new political framework but the trouble is there is no across the board consensus about what to replace the current broken system with.

Committees good.

Reduction of Dail bad.

I'd probably vote no.

I partly agree. I dont greatly see a need to shrink the dail, but certainly we need some reforms. Mainly we need to figure out a way to get a higher grade of individual into the dail - people with both brains and balls, and not just the party yokels we have at the moment.

For that I think we'd need a change of electoral system. Maybe what they have in Scotland, Germany or New Zealand. Or possibly Denmark....

We need real Dail reform. The committees are a fantastic idea -but why mix it with populist nonsense?

They are unconnected changes so they should be two questions put to referenda

This is constitutional reform.

We need to tread extremely carefully here.

I don't think an air of panic is the best environment to be proposing constitutional reform for political gain.

There's much lower hanging fruit to go after.
