Return of the Mad Mullah - McDowell in bid to save the Seanad

According to today's Sunday Independent Michael McDowell is ready to return to Irish politics to fight the abolition of Seanad Éireann. McDowell has already met with some FG, Lab and SF Senators on the matter and intends to lead the "No" campaign with Senator Feargal Quinn.

Perhaps McDowell has been inspired by the recent reformation of the Stone Roses. If a drug addled, permanently drunk group of deadbeats can make a comeback why not a former leader of the PD's?

McDowell is an interesting character. Always a legend in his own head the former leader of the free-market, ethical PD's helped flush Ireland's competitiveness down the toilet, allowed a property bubble to develop and stood by as Bertie lied to the Nation again and again.

I wonder if McDowell is back for "one night only" or if he's testing the waters for a more permanent political tour in the form of a new political party? Time will tell if there are any fans left willing to buy his t-shirts.

If true, the result is a foregone conclusion and the Senate will go.

McDowell in comeback bid to save the Seanad

The Independent has reported that former Attorney General and Tanaiste is to lead the fight to save the Seanad. Mc Dowell's attendance at a "private" gathering of anxious Senators asserted that any attempt by Enda Kenny to abolish the Seanad "would go down in flames".

Other Senators lined up to head public debates are David Norris, Fergal Quinn and and Kenny's nominee Eamon Coughlan.

It seems this flippant election promise under a cost saving shadow, will be a lot tougher the Taoiseach first hoped.

Pity McDowell wasn't as fussed about running the country when he was Tanaiste and standing up to FF. Campaigning to maintain the Senate just seems petty and self-serving.

    How is it self-serving?

Did he not get the message that he's not wanted in public life?

Twice I've found myself on the same page as McDowell. On Oireachtas enquiries and the Seanad.

McDowell is of a class and background that believes in its right to political appointments, pointless jobs for failed politicians and sinecures at tax payers expense. He had his chance, his 15 mins of fame and in my humble opinion he blew it and was in the Top 10 politicians responsible for the state we're in at the moment. This high profile "come back" stinks of needing to be relevant again.
