    Best Taoiseach of Modern Times

I thought it might be an interesting exercise to ask posters which modern Taoiseach they would rate as being the best, and why.

Lemass is my cut-off point as he left office in 1966 - difficult to view anything prior to that as being modern.

The list below covers every subsequent holder of the office (I left BIFFO out, obviously).

So, who was the best - and why?

    Jack Lynch
    Liam Cosgrave
    Charles Haughey
    Garret Fitzgerald
    Albert Reynolds
    John Bruton
    Bertie Ahern
    Enda Kenny

It's probably Bruton, but I'm not sure why. I guess I don't know anything particularly bad about him, and the economy seemed to start picking up when he was in power.

In his grave. Only going back to 1966. And I agree with History Student, no great leaders there.

Why start such a thread so late on a Saturday night? Also, you have included 8 Taoisigh and left Cowen out. There are only 4 others. Why not include them all?

Your thread, your rules I suppose. So I would probably go with Cosgrave. Although, as a person, Garret would be head and shoulders above them all.

Why leave Biffo out and put Ahern in? Ahern let Biffo run around naked as Minister for Finance and that's the reason we have such a huge deficit.

    I agree 100%

My question was who was the best among them, that's all.

If the best equals the most successful by their own standards, Charles Haughey and then Bertie Ahern made the most money out of politics. With the Irish Press, Dev might be up there too.
