Certainly depends on the 'crime'. The judicial system is an ass. Somebody standing up for what is right against a powerful corruption can be found guilty of a crime. Few would agree with the finding but the result would be a criminal conviction. That person would be likely to make a very good future politician indeed for having the guts to stand up against corruption.
However, if they burgled a house or defrauded the old man next door, those crimes should never be forgotten nor forgiven.
