Govt defeats motion on Waterford bye-election

The Government side won the vote 77-72 on the motion to name a date to elect Martin Cullen's replacement.
Government Chief Whip John Curran accused Fine Gael of political opportunism in bringing the motion.

Mr Curran said the Government's focus is fixing the economy and getting the country out of the recession and would therefore vote against the Fine Gael motion.

Right, fair enough, two down one to go.

If they (FG) really really want a bye election, then they have as good a case as ever for looking for the Dublin South writ to be moved, as it was a FG TD that resigned.

But, what I would do if I were them, is organise a march of people from Dublin South to go to the Dáil on the day the motion is put down, to demand their democratic right to representation.

They got over 25,000 votes in DS... surely they could get a reasonable number of people to travel to the Dáil (say 5,000)

Or ask people to write to Eamon Ryan to demand it.

FG by putting forward this Waterford motion have used ANY political capital they may have from the fact that Dublin South was held by them (and by tradition their motion to move would not be voted down*).

*it does happen, eg FG in 1986 prevented the by-election caused by the death of Clem Coughlan to be held.

I'd like to see FG come out with a detailed plan on how they'll change the election laws so that if a seat becomes available 14 months before a GE is due then the seat has to be contested within 2 months. These matters shouldn't be decided on an ad-hoc basis by the government of the day.

I'd put more money on them just whining about how FF are smarter at utilising the current system than they are though.

Did any members of the Green Party vote on this motion or the Donegal motion? Surely if pressure is applied to the Moral High Horse Party then they will crack like they did with O'Dea?

"Mr Curran said the Government's focus is fixing the economy and getting the country out of the recession and would therefore vote against the Fine Gael motion".

What's this? An official admission this Government is incapable of doing more than one thing at a time? Maybe if they worked the same hours, weeks and months as the rest of us who are lucky enough to still have a job they could perhaps summon up enough brain power and energy to do two things at a time. What a lying, deceitful bunch of conniving wasters those 77 are - roll on the GE.

If I were in town today I would go up to Biffo and start squaking "Bok, bok, bok, bok, bok!"

He has no motivation to hold these as he knows he will be defeated. And you cannot hold one without holding the other two so it would be at least a one seat net gain for FG, and possibly even a two seat gain. Almost certain to be a two seat net loss for the government.

It appears you can't run the country, and contest/hold a bye-election.
