Ahern proposes Autumn Referendum on blasphemy.

interesting, maybe we could have the now worded child protection referendum on the same day. l don't think there was a 'sophisticated internet campaign' btw, just those who questioned the prominence of religion here and the criminalisation of thought and speech : http://blasphemy.ie/2010/03/14/ahern...-on-blasphemy/

interestingly also the lrish Times did not make mention of the enactment of the law on January lst 2010, though the AI campaign made worldwide headlines. Madam carried a Breda O Brien piece the following saturday which side-swiped the intent of the campaign : Internet attacks on church belie need for open secularity online - The Irish Times - Sat, Jan 16, 2010

Errrmmmm, imagine if they held a referendum and people decided to keep the anti-blasphemy article in the constitution? Things are laughable enough as they are but at least we can blame some silly politicians. If the Nation votes down the proposal, the whole country becomes a laughing stock.

Couldn't really call it a sophisticated campaign and nobody but a few immams support the continuation of a blasphemy provision in our Constitution, as clearly demonstrated by the reaction from all the majority of religious leaders following the enactment of the Defamation Act.

Well, at least the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran would love us.

Most Irish people think Muhammad was a boxer in the 1960s

... so, in effect, by changing the legislation, Ahern has cost the country the cost of holding a referendum? If he had done nothing, we would de facto have had no law against blasphemy.
