This was put in the 1937 Constitution by Dev but even he didn't think anybody would be stupid enough to actually enact anti-blasphemy legislation! If it is ever used it will be by those who have no interest in our Republic or democracy.

Nah I have been led to believe most of them are against it because it also makes it illegal for THEM to say bad things about OTHER religions too.

Had the law been established to protect their church from everyone else… THEN they might have supported it.

When Michael Nugent was appearing on Radio Stations like Today FM discussing this, there were church representatives on at the same time. None of them appeared to support the law either.

In fact, to date, I have not met or heard of anyone at all supporting it except for this site’s aforementioned resident Muslim Fundamentalist who calls himself a Muslim “group” despite being one man and his keyboard.

This law was a sellout to Islamic fundamentalists. It's reversal will be a rare victory against the PC-brigade. Despite some on the political-Left opposing it, the reality is that the PC-brigade privately support the ban because they see it in the context of their worldview of "multiculturalism" in which indigenous Western societies lose part of their identity to make way for newcomers.

Well, I think if it is removed from the constitution by an overwhelming majority, it will most definitely send out a statement of where Ireland's people stand, rather than what some anachronistic establishment or dusty old constitution written in a totally different era.

    Bring it on!

    lrish Times reportage.

Three days after Minister Ahern's proposal to delete this offensive and wholly unnecessary article from the defamation Bill (after P.ie, Politico.ie and Guardian reports) , the IT report is published : http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/...266442534.html

No, it was not. This has been explained countless times. It's a result of a constitutional imperative, and it was proposed that it be done away with some years ago. As ever, the Government of the time did SFA with it, and the current genius thought it would be easier to enter some fluff of a law rather than hold a referendum.
