Donie Cassidy should have stayed in the music business. If someone wanted to look at someone who has done well out of FF - then have a look at Donie. He was never the sharpest legal mind going, but he has also been a good one to know who to pin his collar to - so he could rise further.

From Westmeath CC, to a strong alligence with Albert Reynolds, to a TD under the Bert, to getting shafted again, to massive landbanks in Mullingar and beyond, Donie has done well for himself.

But he is probably right, you don't get wealthy from being a politician - its the doors it opens, the backs scratched, the funerals attended and the foresight to know that the farmland out in Cullion owned by XXXXXX with no sons on the farms - could be best put to use as a Retail park and planning for 200 houses.

His early money is a credit to any young person in this country and worthy of a "Well done". He did then go on to invest in property in Dublin.

However - with Donie - You have to ask about his association with zoning around the midlands and how situations arose where he held massive lands banks around Mullingar and other midland towns - that pushed the Development plans of these towns to the limits.

Westmeath FF, what a heavweight organisation.
Wiggy Cassidy, Mammy O' Rourke and TR Dallas.

If it wasn't so serious you could sit back and roar laughing at the pantomime.

Anorakphobia, Westmeath is one of the places where Fianna Fail INCREASED their vote at the local elections in June.

    Ireland's bible belt.
In fairness I hear the FF organisation down there "work like Blacks"

Cassidy is an embarrassing disgrace; the thought of having that fool representing us with foreign investors is painful.

Noel Edmonds was being interviewed by Pat Kenny a few years ago and said Cassidy strode up to him on holidays in France and introduced himself and stated rattling on about how he was a big in the entertainment industry and also a member of the Irish parliament.
Edmonds thought it was a set up and couldn't believe it when he realised it was all true.
Edmonds was laughing at the fool and then added to Kenny "and that thing on his head, what the hell is that all about"?

How 8,000 people could stick an X beside his name beggars belief, but I suppose when the alternatives are a half daft 72 year old windbag and a guy who wears a stetson, maybe not.

Is there anyone out there who understands properly

    (a) Seanad Agendas &
    (b) Oireachtas members' allowances?

It would appear that rather a lot of Seanad time is spent tied up hearing statements, which seems to serve only to maximise senators' claims to overnight allowances & the like.

If Senator Cassidy doesn't believe it's possible to make money out of politics, it certainly hasn't stopped him trying...

Unemployment for them is a fat pension and a few sinecures. It would take a more radical change of the system. Say, put people who've had to live on the minium wage in charge.

Yes indeed, politics in Ireland doesn't make you wealthy. Mr. Cassidy has used the platform that politics gave him to make his money.

What is most interesting is his relationship with Ahern. He was foisted on Westmeath by Ahern against M O'Rourke's wishes in 2002. He won. She came back 5 yrs later. He was not shafted by Ahern. His business interests happen to be located in Westmeath and ... Dublin Central. He is prepared to use his influence without scruple.

Cassidy is a particularly despicable individual who sums up a lot of what is wrong with FF and Ireland.
