    Gaddafi may compensate IRA victims

According to the Independent Libya has signalled a willingness to work with the UK to provide compensation for victims of the IRA during the Troubles when Libya is believed to have sent weapons to them.

RTÉ News: Libya hints at compensation for IRA victims

Does this represent a positive step on the road towards dealing with these events or does it cause more hurt by re-enforcing the idea of a hierarchy of victims (especially if the UK does no provide similiar compensation to victims of loyalists and British military forces - collusion notwithstanding)?

Still, i say that if the likes of Colin Parry can get some money out of the Libyan (who is beginning to look like a big stupid money tree among his macho Arab peers) then in isolation that is a positive thing.

It's likely BP will end up paying it.

    Oh the irony.

Good. Now can we get the Brit Gov to pay compo to the relatives of the many Irish civilians killed by their Forces in this state? And the Irish Gov to contribute a little for helping them benefit from their State Terrorism?

The lack of British pressure on Lybia to pay compensation to IRA Bomb victims is the Main headline and first story on the ITV news.

Everyone is claiming its because of an oil deal, but in reality, it could easily be because it would open the flood gates for claims against the British government for victims of their security forces in Northern Ireland.

Unfortunately for the Unionists they don't believe the extent of collusion in Northern Ireland, and can't understand why the Brits won't fight for them like the Americans did for the Lockerbie victims.

Compensation forthcoming to all the victims of British arms manufacturers & dealers, no doubt.

terrible f..ecking idea and should be blocked if the loo-la is serious about it (which i doubt), talk about re-opening the pain and suffering again, esp as this would be one sided, remember the reaction when the Eames report recommended (or provided an option) a compensation package for all those killed as a token gesture ? f..ecking disaster

the Eames-Bradley Report recommended that £12,000 be paid to the next of kin of everyone everyone killed in the Northern conflict, regardless of whether they were allegedly involved in paramilitarism or state collusion but the proposal was denounced by FAIR and the other Unionist parties/groups.

Now the same people are demanding money from Libya: can someone explain the logic behind this?

at a guess its because it would only be IRA victims would receive same and that is whom they represent, victims of loyalist's / the state don't count as much / if at all in Willie Fraziers world view, it would also endorse their position higher up the hierarchy of victims as they see it

This has to be one of the most ridiculous proposals I have ever heard.

I wouldnt be on for paying out money to victims as it is not going to in anyway help the victims in the pain of the loss of their loved ones. The problem with the Eames proposal was rather simple. He was going to give the same money out to the idiot who blew himself up while murdering 9 other innocent shoppers going about their business on the shankill road on a Saturday afternoon. That just couldnt be sold to any normal thinking person on any side of the political divide. The way to help victims is for the peace to continue and make sure there is no more victims to add to the list.
