Ian Paisley prepared to become First Minister?

    Hi folks,

I just browsed the news about the actual status in Northern Ireland. Is it really true that Sinn Fein would accept Ian Paisley as the future First Minister of Northern Ireland in the case of a sucess in the current negotiations? I thought Sinn Fein would never accept him for that but his vice Tom Robinson. What has happend for their change?

    Best regards

    Hi Daniel,

I bet you're an American? Tommy Robinson isn't likely to become first minister unless old Sir Ian crokes it first. It seems the Reverend Paisley has nuclear blood through his veins and will never retire. He is, it seems, the anti-christ.

Therefore he will become first minister of Northern Ireland. What he will do with such awesome power, we can only wait and see...

    Wednesday,

Tom Robinson, Peter Robinson, whatever is name is! Daniel, I would guess is Irish-American therefore his interest in Irish affairs is commendable. If he gets the odd name wrong who cares? Tommy, Peter - they're all christian names!

The same thought occured to me.

The DUP have certainly changed their tune since Paisley's memorable, 'Save Ulster from Sodomy', campaign.

Sorry, I made a mistake, the real name of Paisleys vice is PETER Robinson, of course. And I am not an American, I am from Germany.

But what I would like to know: why isn't there any sign that Sinn Fein would reject Paisley as First Minister? As I visited Belfast in April, a prominent republican told me, they would never accept Paisley as First Minister because his bigott role in the conflict.

Apparently there are rumblings of discontent within the DUP over this. Furthermore, Willie Frazer, the head of a Loyalist victims group called F.A.I.R. has come out against it. In my personal opinion the DUP and Paisley will ultimately say no to this deal - remember they haven't officially accepted it yet. What I would like to then happen is Plan B i.e. the 2 govts imposing some form of Joint-Authority or whatever. However I think the British govt has always baulked at actually trying this as the numerous other missed 'deadlines' have shown. So personally I expect more of talkshows for years to come. Whether peace can ultimately last in such a political-vacuum is highly questionable though.

A lot of us do have a problem with Paisley being First Minister or anything else ... but we endorsed the GFA and under its terms he's clearly entitled, so

And if we were going to be allowing a situation where a party could veto the ministerial choice of another party, it would surely be used against us.
