The thing in northern Ireland is politicians within the two main parties are voted in not solely on their skills as politicians, but more on tribal and religious views. Very few Catholics are going to vote for a unionist politician no matter how good he is at his job, and the same would apply to members of the protestant community in relation to catholic politicians. Politics in northern Ireland is more akin to some middle eastern country at the moment.
