A southerner could obviously live on the Falls Road but not the Shankill Road. You don't have to agree with their politics on the Falls but reality is you have no chance whatsoever on the Shankill - even if you were non-political. Your accent and religion rule you out of accomodation there.
We live in the age of the overworked, and the under-educated; the age in which people are so industrious that they become absolutely stupid.

I would think most of the student housing in Holylands etc is getting snapped up at the minute with Uni starting back, you will need to be quick.

And btw, if you want to avoid bigots and sectarian behaviour you are best not going to the Holylands area!!!

The decent student housing is probably already gone, as they start back in 3 weeks or less.

I live on the shore of lough neah, north armagh in a rural area thats very pleasent, and its not far from the motorway that has me in belfast in about 30 mins.
I wouldnt lve in belfast unless necessary, its very expensive and you dont get much for your money.
Your best bet is to find a more remote area as close to belfast as possible, if you have your own car that is, although public transport is very good and reliable.
Also northern ireland is very normal you'll find, the main differences you will notice are different road signs, union jacks and tri colours in built up housing estates, and well thats about it. Dont worry its not all burnt out landrovers and petol bombs like its portrayed on the news and in papers, very very little effort is ever put into showing the scenic and nicer side to northern ireland, belfast itself is overshaddowed by scenic mountains and forests, and i believe you'll find the people quite friendly, not the hate filled evil war mongers were portrayed as

I remember partying in the holylands years ago, best craic ever.
5 am in the morning and people are playing hurling in the streets in fancy dress still drunk, people from all over ireland and beyond coming out of house parties for a fry up at the local spar for a hangover cure.
I think anti-social behaviour in the student holy lands would be a problem, but defnitly not sectarian.

To be honest, i would probobly avoid it myself now, as i am no longer single or about 19 , but it was great when i was

Thanks for the replies! Yes, it's Queens I'll be going to. it's actually next year so it's why I'm asking now. I've been to Belfast for weekends but nveer lived there. I realise my southern accent could create problems. It's why I'm hoping to live in a place thats just not so concerned with that. My religion I hoped wouldn't matter. But I know it will. I'm Protestant anyway. Not a very religious one.

I'd rather live away from all the flags and stuff. Both sides. Just want to live in n area where that stuff isn't too much of an issue.

Yea, if you can afford it!
Stranmillis, Malone and Lisburn road are the "traditional" areas for student/professional housing.
Around Queens university (the so called Holy Land) is OK as well.
But stay on the University side of the Ormeau Road!

The Donegall Road/Village area is an option for less expensive housing near the university/hospitals - but probably not advisable if you have a broad Irish accent.

Is it Queens you're going to or "the other one"?
Telling the chap/chapess to stay on the Univerity side of the Ormeau Road is a little short-sighted. While that side of the river is almost homogeneously nationalist/ republican, the community on the other side is more eclectic and mixed. Indeed, Ballynafeigh is actually more Catholic than Protestant (not that that should matter), although the Orange Hall and few surrounding streets would make one think otherwise. Annadale Flats and the 'rough' streets may make some of it look bad, but on the whole the Upper Ormeau (which includes the quasi-mansions adjacent to Ormeau Park) would be equally (if not more) ideal as the other places you have mentioned.

Of course, perhaps you meant don't go near streets such as Hatfield Street on the Lower Ormeau, but rather stay on the Holylands side of the Lower Ormeau, which is a spearate issue.
