UDA Show Of Strength In Larne

You may have heard a report about a man in Larne being very badly assaulted. Of course the news outlets have not revealed what went on around this.

The word is that he was not the intended target. The UDA wanted his brother. The brother was not available so he done instead. He had a TV dropped on his head as part of the assault.

The UDA held a show of strength in Larne which included about 50 men, and, in spite of the supposed decommissioning, the display included firearms.

The police obviously sent for backup which took an hour to arrive and - as the minibuses arrived - they were attacked by stones and withdrew. The attack on the police was well coordinated. They used cars and so on for cover and allowed the police in - the police were effectively ambushed. The lookout was wearing a chelsea shirt and shouted warnings and directions to the men doing the ambushing.

There has been trouble all over Larne. The RUC/PSNI have proven to be unable or unwilling to protect people in the town. It loks like we are slipping back to the late '60s and the nationalists in Larne will have to look to themselves once again for protection unless of course the Óglaigh Na h'Éireann step in to help.

No one was arrested. It has been kept quiet with what seems like a news blackout.

What would have happened if this was nationalists from Lurgan?

The South East Antrim brigade of the UDA split from the main organisation a number of years ago. I would imagine this show of strength involves these guys. It's hard to imagine, in light of recent decommissioning, etc., that such an event would be endorsed by the likes of Jackie McDonald.

I am sure that they will conjure up some mad evidence to show that they were provoked by Nationalists.

Colin Duffy would have been charged for every conceivable offence I'd guess.

Perhaps he will - maybe he antagonised the Larne loyalists enough that they had no alternative.

No, now you are pushing it Arty.

It is obvious that they were offended by the Virgin Mary appearing in a tree in Limerick recently. They thought it was crazy that the Parades commission re-routed her appearance just to appease the local Catholics - it is traditional that she appears in Larne at this time of year.

In light of partial decommisioning Martin and they also issued a statement recently that they were withdrawing their (conditional at best) support for the police.
The UDA has long been seen as a fractured organisation (which they like to portray themselves as also when needed) and I for one draw no distinction from these cowboys and the rank and file members of the organisation as a whole.

I acknowledge that the UDA is more a collection of local militia than a monolith and so central control tends to be harder for them, but Larne is a specifically complex case.

At a recent meeting in Larne there was proposed that they should attack Catholic homes, this was dropped when it was further proposed that the first house to be attacked would be the one belonging to initial proposers mother, she being Catholic.
