Soul searching: Who are we and were are we going?

There's a lot of talk in Ireland of who we arn't in defending our 'identity', never leaving much time and thought into who we actually are.
This has left us almost in a state of arrested development.
We're in the heart of western civilization yet we are a basket case in our cultural development.

Other countries our devolping culture while we cling to backward nationalist romantism like a child to a dummy.

There have been a few bright lights but in general Ireland seems to be a very conservative society.
Woe betide anyone who would rebel against it and spawn something fresh, inspiring, something that would put us on the map as cultural poineers.

No, that would be a bit too much, lets just keep er safe, suck up the culture from other countries and then complain that our 'culture' is under threat.

I'd write a song bemoaning it, but some brit stole my harp.

    Edit: Wrong forum maybe.

    1. It's far easier to cling to romantic historical legends than it is to delve into a muddy reality that may force you to occassionally rethink your long held positions and maybe, just maybe, admit that somebody else has a better idea.

    2. Radical thought and change runs counter to an individuals desire to sit on their duff and let the world fix itself. God bless Sombody-Elses-Problem fields.

    3. Personal action would remove the opportunity to blame someone else for all of life's woes and thereby remove the chance to sneer rightiously at the other side for their callous disregard.
