I'm sure the families of the victims of the person on whom's behalf the confession was made, will be dancing on the streets at the result.

Now Breen is refusing to disclose the details of a conversation with a terrorist - that should now be made a specific offence.

If the banks are out for a bail,
and Lenny's efforts end up as a fail,
    when the Somer does come,
    to the Country they'll run,
And leave a Fine mess for the Gael.

Opps. I will delete above so.

Among those who went into the witness box earlier this month to back Ms Breen's stance were her editor, Noirín Hegarty, Alex Thomson of Channel 4 News, Sunday Times columnist Liam Clarke, media commentator Roy Greenslade and the BBC's John Ware.

All of them were united in stressing how a journalist must honour any guarantee of confidentiality given to those who provide information.

Suzanne Breen also received support from her union, the National Union of Journalists, which has a code of conduct that includes protecting sources.
On what planet is a terrorist admitting to an act of murder considered merely as a source? And how is it a matter of honour to protect such murderers?

The role of a journalist is to provide neutral information. l do not think that compromises a sympathetic stance. ln this case the deputy first minister showed himself capable of unwonted meddling in press freedom btw, pls cf the other Suzanne Breen thread. She was doing her job and presenting information, it is not the job of the state to interfere in how info is presented, be it through the utilisation of PSNI or indeed ministerial statement.

It already is an offence, but she's not charged with that or with anything else, this was a civil case to force her to hand over the notes. But since you obviously support the intimidation and manipulation of the media no doubt you would relish her being arrested and held for 28 days.

No doubt that the RUC will continue their policy of harassing all those who don't tow their political line, and more and more people will gradually recognise this political orange police state for what it is.

Great news for Suzanne. Another nail in the coffin for political policing! I'd say McGuinness & Co are regretting their attempts to isolate her now. Instead of marginalising those brave enough to report on the true strength and moral strength of republican politics, their cause has been catapulted into the headlines. Couldn't have backfired more spectacularly!

But not to allow ones self to be a conduit for terrorist/political propaganda.

Confessions to priests and lawyers have privilege - I do not see any moral* reason why a person who makes their money from writing stories for publication can get away with not helpiing the police find the killers of two young men when those killers, or their spokesman, had a conversation with her.

*obviously the court has found some legal reason.

To solve such dilemma in future: it should be an offence to withhold the details of any conversation with any member of an unlawful organisiation during the currency of a police/garda investigation where that conversation is for the purposes of publication of any story or for research.

Let the RIRA/CIRA contact the PSNI or Gardai with their admission of responsibilities/confessions.
