What are the implications of a Tory general election victory for Ireland

It seems more and more likely that a British General Election will be called sooner rather than later.

Given their close links to Ulster Unionism, what would be the effect of a Tory government in Old Blighty on Ireland.

Add to this the possibility of a Fine Gael (without Labour or SF) government in the Republic, this combination could have big effect on the direction of events in the North.

A Tory victory could also have Lisbon Treaty implications.

Mainly in relation to Lisbon. It would kill the Treaty off completely. The Tories have said that unless all member states have ratified, they will put it to a referendum and campaign for a no vote - which is certain to be the outcome of such a vote in Eurosceptic Britain. At that point, the pressure on Ireland dissolves, and the EU can concentrate on making the best of the Nice arrangements, which - while far from perfect - are a million times better than the democracy-destroying provisions of the Lisbon Treaty, which has now been turned down by 3 national electorates that the elites are treating with contempt. A motion of no-confidence brought down the Callaghan govt in 1979 and forced a General Election but Labour were a minority govt then. I doubt it could force an early election this time. Labour backbenchers will want time - like FF - to ride the recession out and try to rebuild their electoral-fortunes in the time remaining in the parliamentary-term.

If they win before, and if, Ireland ratify Lisbon, then they will reject Lisbon, without doubt. That actually won't affect Ireland any differently than any other member of the EU as we will all then be in the same boat. Back to square one. Might not be any bad thing at this stage.

No more than a Labor victory, unless there are people that don't know there was a Treaty in 1922.

Cameron is absoulutely devious. He is a duplicitous twat with the public persona of Blair and the cunning of Thathcher. I would not trust him an inch.

FT is right about Lisbon, it would remove the pressure on Ireland.

However, on the North, we would have to watch our backs.

It's different when a big country says No.

The Tories will be alright to Ireland so long as the North remains ok and things keep relatively stable, if NI does go up again then the reactionary Tory party we all know and love will definitely revive itself. They haven't gone away you know.....(Redwood still lurks).
